How does it work?

Alexander Technique works by retraining your brain to change your patterns of muscle tension and pain perception. We teach you how to use this to improve posture, movement, and body awareness to reduce strain and improve overall wellbeing.

How effective is it?

Back Republic's methodology is based on a number of methods, including the Alexander Technique (AT).

In a pilot study, Back Republic's combined coursework plus online group Alexander Techique coaching methodology reduced participants' back pain days per month by 20 days.

Note that this is from an unpublished pilot study so there are caveats, but the results are encouraging. More information in the Research tab.

Note that it's possible that you may not see any improvements in back pain at all. Back pain is notoriously tricky,

How long does it take to see results?

Results vary depending on factors such as commitment level, existing habits, and your medical condition.

One participant rid himself of 30 years of daily scoliosis pain in just 2 weeks' study. For others the improvements are more gradual, or not at all. Back pain is like that. See "How effective is it?".

Is it hard or strenuous?

No, there is next to no physical effort involved as it is largely brain training. The mental effort is gentle and easy.

How much of my time will it take?

Depending on which option you take, the commitment is 30 minutes of course videos per week plus potentially one group coaching session of 60-90 minutes per week. Actual practice of the mental techniques takes 10 seconds, 10-20 times per day.

Is it safe?

Back Republic's methods are primarily educational, and are gentle and non-invasive.

They involve gentle guidance and body awareness exercises, rather than intense physical exertion or manipulation.
